03 / ACCESS FOR CHANGING BUSINESS NEEDS
Lines of creditUnderstand access.
Plan for what can change.
A business line of credit provides access to a credit facility under agreed conditions. Draw availability, repayment, renewal, and any ability to reuse repaid amounts depend on the facility agreement.
Discuss this optionSeparate the facility from each draw
A line of credit conversation involves both the overall facility and the rules for accessing funds. The agreement may set conditions that must be satisfied before a draw and duties that continue while the facility is open. An available limit does not necessarily mean every request is automatically accessible.
Ask how draws are requested, what must be verified, and how each draw affects payment obligations. A revolving line allows eligible repaid principal to become available for future borrowing, subject to the agreement. Confirm the timing and limits in writing; a series of separately approved term loans does not provide the same ongoing access.
Connect access to an operating need
Business owners may consider a facility when discussing recurring expenses, inventory cycles, or differences between customer receipts and operating payments. First understand the reason for the timing gap. Recurring access to credit does not replace a sustainable view of the business’s obligations.
Review the cost of keeping a facility open as well as the costs associated with using it. Ask which charges can apply without a draw and whether a draw changes other obligations. Evaluate the full agreement alongside the business’s existing commitments.
Know when availability can change
Facilities can include review, renewal, reporting, collateral, and guarantee requirements. The provider may have contractual rights to restrict future draws or change availability under specified circumstances. Read those provisions and ask what information the business must maintain.
Plan for how essential expenses would be handled if a draw were unavailable or a facility were not renewed. Keep a record of renewal requirements and review dates if an agreement is entered into. General education cannot establish what access any provider will offer to a particular business.
